Gay people are finally off the hook – as a UKIP candidate has questioned whether refugees are to blame for flooding across the UK.
The UK Independence Party sacked councillor David Silvester last year after he famously claimed flooding was God’s punishment for same-sex marriage – but refused to drop Parliamentary candidate Ted Strike when he also blamed bad weather on homosexuality.
However, gay people can rest as ease this week after Storm Desmond displaced thousands of people from their homes: this time it’s the refugees that are apparently to blame.
In a public Facebook post, Stephen Poulter – who appears to have stood for the party in a council election this year – questioned the link.
He wrote: “Now, I am not religious in any way. But it seems funny that the so called refugees have been sent up north from the Syrian Camps.
“Is’nt (sic) it funny that as soon as they do. The floods start up that way. I wonder?????”
One commenter wrote: “That’s a good point and was it an omen of things to come?”
A UKIP spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.
Writing in 2013, UKIP’s David Silvester infamously claimed: “I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same sex marriage Bill.
“But he went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so.
“Now, even as Cameron sheds crocodile tears on behalf of destitute flooded homeowners, playing at advocate against the very local councils he has made cash-strapped, it is his fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods.
“Since the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, the nation has been beset by serious storms and floods.
“One recent one caused the worst flooding for 60 years. The Christmas floods were the worst for 127 years. Is this just global warming or is there something more serious at work?”
